Pastoral and Leadership Duties
Those recognized as pastors within Grace Baptist Church should be able to verbalize a sense of a God given calling to a vocation of Christian ministry. They should be able to articulate a theology/philosophy of ministry that shapes their pastoral engagement. They must have gifts that are strategic to the fulfillment of the position description.
This position assists the Lead Pastor in providing leadership and overall direction of the church staff, leading all functional ministries in the accomplishment of the church’s mission.
The Pastor of Operational Ministries will serve in three critical roles: leader, developer, and supervisor.
Leader
As leader, this position will develop strong relationships with volunteers, and congregants with the desire to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus and in their relationship with others. As one of the primary pastors in the church, this position will provide a form of pastoral care in tangible ways to the congregation as a whole. It is important that as a Pastor, the staff and volunteers in their area of responsibility feel cared and loved.
Developer
As developer, this position will purposefully and strategically train and equip key leaders to prepare them to minister to the larger church as a whole. In that process this person will train, develop and equip the operational aspects of the church to fulfill the mission and vision of the church and expand the ministry of the church. The Pastor of Operational Ministries is also responsible to develop an operational plan that is systematic and sustainable for future growth.
Supervisor
As supervisor, this position will provide both short-term and long-term strategy and leadership to create and maintain a ministry of excellence. They are responsible for planning and maintaining necessary policies and guidelines; creating and administering ministry budget lines; and ensuring effectiveness of operational ministries at Grace Baptist Church. This position will be responsible for all operational ministry staff and volunteers in this area.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the Operational Staff – 8 hours a week (20%)
- Coach, develop, and give direction to the Operational Staff along with the team leaders in each Operational ministry area.
- Lead regular meetings with the Operational staff to provide and receive input and evaluation on our current ministry effectiveness
- Give direction to the implementation of mission, vision and values in the operational ministry area – 8 hours a week (20%)
- With a team of departmental operational leaders, the Pastor of Operational Ministries ensures that the stated vision and direction of the church is implemented consistently and graciously in the entire operation of the church.
- By mentoring, equipping and empowering key departmental operation leaders, the Pastor of Operational Ministries grows staff to becomes gifted leaders in their specialized operational area.
- Creating a healthy culture of working together across specialized operational and ministry departments with good planning and great strategy ensuring that training and equipping of leaders is happening.
- Initiate and plan a sustainable operational plan - 8 hours a week (20%)
- Ensure the operational readiness of the church through leadership and oversight of the support staff preforming duties in administration, finances, supply and facility management
- Lead an effective and growing volunteer ministry
- Develop annual financial plans that fund the accomplishment of the strategic plan and meet critical financial objectives such as established cash reserve levels. Resource stewardship to create, communicate, and implement a vision driven annual budget.
- Champion the development of infrastructure by all ministry and church leadership areas that supports healthy, long-term growth of the church.
- Lead the church’s building programs including capital fund raising campaigns, master planning, design and architecture, contractor selection and construction.
- Responsible for all daily operations of the church.
- Implement, manage and grow a rental strategy that increases revenue for the church.
- Organizational representation that fosters and grows relationships with strategic partners and key community members.
- Initiate and provide pastoral care to members and non-members of Grace Baptist Church – 4 hours a week (10%)

- To ensure visitation of sick and hospitalized as well as new and current members, in co-operation with the council or a designated team.
- To perform clergy duties such as weddings, baby dedications, and funerals, as well as potentially facilitating new believers/members classes.
- Lead and facilitate a ministry area that has been identified as a need at Grace Baptist Church – 4 hours a week (10%)
- Provides visionary, strategic, innovative, pastoral leadership for this specific ministry area.
- Develop a robust leadership team that implements the mission, vision and values of the church in the community inside and outside of the church
- Dedicated time to personal development – 4 hours a week (10%)
- E.g., Reading, attending conferences, taking courses.
- Administrative duties – 4 hours a week (10%)
- E.g. record keeping, financial management of assigned budget lines.
Preferred Qualifications and Attributes:
- Post-secondary education in a related field (Master’s level preferred).
- Church Leadership - Experience leading ministries within a local church or para-church ministry.
- Leader of Leaders - Able to develop and lead staff who in turn lead volunteer leaders.
- Public Speaker – Skilled and experienced communicator
- Disciple-maker – Able to coach followers of Jesus in taking next steps in their spiritual growth.
- Team Player - Thrives in a team environment and enjoys collaborating with others on projects.
- Innovative – Able to identify needs and initiate new projects and directions.
- Flexibility – Able to adapt, take necessary risks with a team, and move at a fast pace.
- Time Manager – Able to oversee multiple ministry areas and initiatives simultaneously.
- Tech skills - Work efficiently within a PC environment and quickly learn new software and features.
- Other Relevant Skills – Writing, networking, partnering with outside organizations, marketing.
Character and Behavioural Expectations
Perfection is not expected; growth is. Leaders are expected to strive to “live a life worthy of the calling they have received” (Eph. 4:1). Some of the characteristics evident in an effective leader include:

- Prioritizes healthy relationships with others outside of the ministry, such as close, meaningful, friendships.
